The foundation of Tokaj selection wines is aszú berries – grapes affected by the noble rot Botrytis cinerea. The berries gradually lose some of their water, naturally concentrating sugars, flavours and aromatic compounds.
Tokaj classic wines
TOKAJ · SLOVAKIA
Wines shaped by aszú berries, time and exceptional vintages.
Tokaj selection wines are among the rarest expressions of Slovak Tokaj. They are made from aszú berries – grapes affected by the noble rot Botrytis cinerea and known in Slovak as cibéby – and combine concentrated flavour, natural sweetness, vibrant acidity and the unmistakable character of Tokaj.
“Vinum regum, rex vinorum – Wine of kings, king of wines.”
When the French king Louis XIV tasted Tokaj wine, he described its exceptional character with the words “Wine of kings, king of wines.” The phrase became one of the most famous symbols of Tokaj and still reflects its exceptional position among the great wines of the world.
TRADITION · NATURE · TIME Tokaj selection wines are shaped by more than grapes alone. Their character is formed by aszú berries, the unique conditions of the Tokaj wine-growing region, traditional winemaking and time. The result is wine with concentrated flavour, natural sweetness, vibrant acidity and an unmistakable Tokaj signature. The puttonyos designation traditionally indicates the quantity of aszú berries used to make a Tokaj selection wine. As the number of puttonyos increases, so do the concentration, fullness and richness of the resulting wine. Time is an inseparable part of Tokaj. During ageing, sweetness, acidity and aromatic complexity gradually come together to create a harmonious, multi-layered character. From 3 Puttonyos selections through 5 and 6 Puttonyos wines to the rare Tokaj Selection Essence the concentration, intensity and exceptional character of the individual Tokaj styles progressively increase. What makes Tokaj selection wines exceptional?
CLASSIC TOKAJ WINES Classic Tokaj wines include Samorodné wines, Tokaj selections and the rare Tokaj Selection Essence. The aszú berries are not separated from the bunches. The grapes are processed as they have “grown naturally”, and the wine then matures in the traditional way, including ageing in a volcanic tuff cellar. For Tokaj selections, the aszú berries are selected separately. The puttonyos designation traditionally indicates the quantity of aszú berries used in making the wine – the higher the number of puttonyos, the greater its concentration, fullness and richness. What does “classic” mean?
