Behind the name is a story.
Hankove is more than a name on a label. It pays tribute to Jozef Hanko and his bond with the Makovisko vineyard.
Jozef Hanko bought the Makovisko vineyard in 1947. He tended it, built a small house with a cellar and a well, and produced Tokaj wines.
After the communist coup in February 1948, a dictatorship took power, persecuting private entrepreneurs in the name of class struggle. Hanko’s businesses in Košice were nationalised in 1948.
When he planned to leave for West Germany, the State Security service (ŠtB) discovered his preparations. He was arrested on 16 September 1949; he was later sentenced to fifteen years in prison. He spent almost eleven years in labour camps and uranium mines. Decades later, he was rehabilitated and his vineyard was returned to him — and he came back to the place he loved.
When he later entrusted the vineyard to the Ostrožovič family, he saw that it was in good hands. In 2005 he sold it to them. The wine Hankove was created in his memory.
