Tokaj’s distinctive character comes from more than botrytised grapes and long, sunny autumns. The tuff bedrock releases warmth even at night, warming the heart of the vineyards. After dusk, you may encounter the rare moth Saturnia pyri, with a wingspan of up to 15 centimetres. It has become the symbol of this collection of exceptional sweet wines from the family winery J & J Ostrožovič.

What makes Saturnia exceptional?
The sweetness of these wines begins in the grape. Drying, frost or the action of noble rot produces concentrated must, rich in natural sugars, flavours and aromatic compounds.
Each style follows its own path. They share carefully selected grapes and a focus on rich, harmonious flavour. Saturnia offers a distinctive expression of sweet wines from Slovak Tokaj.

Rare expressions of Slovak Tokaj
Saturnia’s story is also reflected in its labels. The rare moth Saturnia pyri, which gave the collection its name, is depicted resting on a white-flowered poppy.
This flower blooms each year in the vineyards of the Makovisko site. The labels thus bring together two natural motifs connected with the place where the wines of the Saturnia Collection originate.

Three paths to natural sweetness
Straw wines
After harvest, the grapes dry slowly on straw or special mats. Over time, their natural sugars and aromatic compounds become concentrated, yielding full-bodied, intense wines.
Ice wines
The grapes remain in the vineyard until the frost arrives. They are harvested and pressed while frozen to yield concentrated must. These wines offer natural sweetness and a distinctive winter story from Tokaj.

Treasures celebrated beyond Tokaj
J & J Ostrožovič produced its first ice wine back in 2002. A Tokaj straw-wine cuvée followed in 2005. Since then, these wines have earned recognition at national and international competitions.
